Now honestly, who doesn’t enjoy and appreciate the taste of chocolate? Well, maybe a few hands went up, but I’m sure 99.99% would agree with me that chocolate is chocolate and when you want it, you just have to have it.  I too belong to the chocolate lovers group better known as “Chocoholics”. We all have our little addictions and mine happens to be the sweet one. Yep, the truth is out and if you would ask me: “What would you take with you on a deserted island?” Not that special Swiss army knife, water or pot to boil the water, but yes...you guessed it, Chocolate (and lots of it).  I can’t go a day without it and love chocolate in any form or shape.

So, as winter is at its peak, and peak and peak again, what better way to keep warm during those long cold winter nights than sitting by the fire watching a movie and enjoying a nice cup of hot chocolate?  I think it’s a must!!!  These three things just compliment each other so well. It definitely reminds you of those family evenings after spending all day outside playing in the snow, building that, oh so memorable, snowman...

And why make hot chocolate out of chocolate powder when you can treat yourself to a much nicer and real version?  And believe me it’s so simple and easy, even kids can make it, with a little bit of supervision of course.

Ingredients:

For four people you’re going to need:

  • 200 G Dark Chocolate (75%)
  • 200 ML Milk
  • 100 ML Condensed Milk
  • 200 ML Whipping Cream

Preparation  Time:

  • 10 Minutes

Instructions:

  1. Break chocolate into squares and cut two squares into small pieces for decoration.
  2. Put the rest of the chocolate in a pot together with 200 ML of milk and 100 ML of condensed milk.

  3. Stir over low heat, be careful not to boil the mixture, and as soon as you see that the mixture is warm, turn off the heat and keep stirring until everything is melted and the mixture is nice and smooth.
  4. In a bowl, whisk 200 ML of whipping cream until peaks form.(Here is some advice on how to make a perfect whipped cream at home)

  5. Serve in tea cups. Pour hot chocolate into the cups and decorate with a spoonful of whipping cream and sprinkle the top with reserved small chocolate pieces.

""Voila" it's all done! Nice and thick, real “Belgian Hot Chocolate” without having to leave your house.

TIPS:

  • If you find the chocolate too thick you can always add more milk in order to reach your preferred thickness
  • Add condensed milk if you find it not sweet enough.
  • For that extra kick why not add 20 ML of Baileys, Kahlua, whiskey or some other liquor.
  • Why not add some fruits?  Place some bananas, cherries or forest fruit on the bottom of the tea cup then pour in the hot chocolate.
  • Instead of the chocolate pieces, you can sprinkle the top with some almonds, crushed walnuts or cinnamon.
  • For a little bit of heat add some Chili powder.

As you can see the options for different versions are unlimited. It’s all up to your taste and imagination.

Cacao trees are originally coming from Mesoamerica and its seeds have been used since 600 B.C. by domestic tribes.  Originally it would be prepared by the Mayas as a cold drink with corn starch, chili and vanilla.  It would be drunk mostly by priests during spiritual ceremonies or by kings, as the seeds were extremely precious.  For the Aztecs, the seeds had so much value that they were used as money!!!   In the 15th Century the cacao tree would be introduced in Europe, but only in 1876 the Swiss, Daniel Peter had the idea to add milk and sugar and… WE’RE ALL THANKFUL FOR THAT :-D
