Do you want to eat healthy and stay trim? Consider fresh smoothies and juices. Since fruits and vegetables are the staples of this form of beverage, smoothies and juices are naturally rich in nutrients, antioxidants and minerals. With a juicer or blender, you can fix any number of interesting concoctions that are low on fat and calories and high in natural goodness.
But before we start, here’s one minor trivia that separate smoothies from juices. Smoothies are more substantial since they also include ingredients such as yogurt, protein supplements, seeds, nuts, herbs, spices and just about anything that can be blended. Juices, on the other hand, extract the liquid part of the fruits and vegetables. They make light infusions of vitamin and minerals and are useful if you have digestive issues or you’re looking to cleanse your body.
Since you can just about juice any combination of fruits and vegetables, I’ve decided to give smoothie recipes instead as they normally include other ingredients other than fruits and vegetables.
Dubbed “Nature’s Sports Drink,” coconut water is the rage these days. This smoothie utilizes its high electrolytes content to hydrate and replenish the body.
- 1 large ripe mango, cut into chunks
- 1 orange, cut into chunks
- 1 cup pineapple, cut into chunks
- 1 cup of chilled coconut water
- A few mint leaves
Put everything in a blender and blend until smooth. Enjoy!
Green and Lean
The power of green is embraced in this easy to make smoothie. Ginger fights inflammation while antioxidant-rich kale keeps free radicals in check. Together with fiber and nutrient-rich apple and kiwis, this somewhat tart but refreshing green concoction will satisfy you without a hefty calorie count. A great refreshing drink to jumpstart your day or a pick-me-up after a workout.
- 1 cup chopped kale
- 1 green apple
- 2 kiwis
- 1 cup chopped cucumber
- 1 small thumb of ginger (or 1/8 tsp powdered ginger)
- 2 tbs of flaxseed
- 6 ice-cubes
Blend until desired consistency. Drink to health!
Berrilicious Strawberry Smoothie
No one can argue about the health benefits of berries. The bright red of strawberries, the deep blue of blueberries mean that they’re chock full of anthocyanins, a powerful group of antioxidants. Garner these benefits and use them with protein powder to give this smoothie more bulk. This drink satisfies and keeps you full for longer, which translates to less food cravings in between meals. A good way to fight flab.
½ cup of fresh blueberries
- ½ cup of chopped strawberries
- 2 tsp whey protein powder
- 1/2 cup almond milk
- 6 ice cubes
Blend well and enjoy.
