Pears are a versatile ingredient that can add flavor and freshness to a variety of appetizers, entrees, and desserts. However, when cooking with pears it is important that you properly remove its core since it can be unpleasant to come across a seed when eating a meal. For this reason, it is important that you learn how to core pears before you attempt to use pears in a dish. Depending on how you will be using the pear, there are several ways in which you can core it. Here are instructions for two of the most common ways to core a pear.

Technique #1: Cut the Pear in Half

This is the most common way in which people core pears, as it allows you easy access to the core, and most recipes will require you to cut the pear anyways. The first step to coring the pear using this technique will be to hold the pear upright on a cutting board and cut the pear in half from the stem end in one quick movement. Next, remove the core (which is the section with the seeds) by scooping it out using a melon baler or a measuring spoon depending on what you have. Finally, you will need to remove the stem. This can be achieved by cutting a “V” shape around the edges of the stem using a knife.

Technique #2: Core a Whole Pear

While technique #1 will work for most recipes you will be making, some recipes such as stuffed pears will require that you core a pear without cutting it in half. Luckily, coring a pear that is still whole is easier than it sounds. First, you will need to slice off part of the bottom of the pear, as this will make it easier to core the pear. Next, take a vegetable peeler or a sharp paring knife and insert it into the bottom of the pear just outside the core. Then, run your knife/peeler in a circle around the core, which should then allow you to scoop out and remove the core.

Learning to remove the core of a pear is an important skill to have, since pears can be a great enhancement to add to many dishes.
