Making a gingerbread house from scratch isn't a walk in the park. It requires a bit of know-how, equal parts patience, and materials that you have to stop yourself from eating. But once complete, a gingerbread house is a fabulous centerpiece for any table.
Here's everything you need to know how to make a gingerbread house in 8 steps.
Step 1. Find a recipe that suits your needs. There are tons of variations available in books and all over the internet. Choose the one you like and gather your ingredients.
Step 3. It's time to concoct your ingredients into tangible pieces. As stated before, find a recipe you like and follow the directions. Once complete, move on to step 4.
Step 4. Welcome! Cut out your patterns (following the diagrams from earlier if you like) with a sharp straight-edge knife. Make clean cuts to allow for solid construction.
Step 5. Create your mortaring tool by placing your royal icing into a pastry bag with a writing tip. Decorate the outsides of your cut pieces as they lay flat. Let dry until hardened.
Step 6. Glue sides, front and back of house together at corners using the royal icing. For stability, lay something next to each side so the icing has time to set and your walls don't fall down.
Step 7. Glue the roof pieces to the top of your un-roofed house. Glue any remaining pieces you have left into place.
Step 8. After the house is completely set (about a half hour), continue to decorate your house with gumdrops, licorice, peppermint, etc.
