Have you ever been to Italy and wish you could go back, or maybe going to Venice or Rome is on your bucket list? Italian cuisine includes a variety of different ingredients which are commonly used; such as basil, olive oil and nuts. Other common food items are tomatoes, meat, fish and cheese. Of course, Italy is probably most well-known for the use of a diverse variety of pasta. Traditional meals in Italy are usually 3 or 4 courses, as mealtime is seen more as a time to spend with family and friends than immediate sustenance.

A tradition Italian evening meal looks something like this:

  • Aperitivo: (aperitif): consists of a sweet wine or cider, usually Prosecco or Campari
  • Antipasto (“before the meal”): hot or cold appetizers, often fresh made bread with warmed olive oil/vinaigrette for dipping
  • Primo (first course): a hot dish such as pasta, pizza, risotto, gnocchi or soup
  • Secondo (second course): fish or meat dish; veal, pork or chicken are most commonly used
  • Contorno (side dish): served with first or second course as a side dish, usually a salad or fresh vegetables.
  • Dolce: (dessert) cakes or cookies, Tiramisu is one of the more famous Italian desserts, sometimes a plate of cheeses and fruits is offered
  • Caffe:  coffee – espresso, cappuccino, etc.
  • Digestivo: (digestives): liquors/liqueurs, popular choices are Grappa, Sambuca or Limoncello
