Few pleasures are greater than taking the first sip of coffee in the morning. It is truly marvelous that such a wonderful drink comes from nothing but a bitter bean growing from a plant that is not much more than a bush yet it does. Not only does coffee taste wonderful it increases physical stamina and mental alertness by using the miraculous chemical caffeine. Really caffeine (like nicotine) is a natural pesticide keeping small insects from eating the plants' leaves. Somehow in humans caffeine interfaces with articular receptors within our brains blocking the effects of adenine. Adenine is a type of molecule that is produced when certain neurons have been active for while. They are partially responsible for the feeling of sleepiness and that is why coffee makes us feel less tired.
Some historians claim that coffee helped create the European enlightenment. Around the fifteenth century, when clean drinking water was scarce, people began switching from wine and beer (mental depressants) to coffee (a mental stimulant). Furthermore, the invention of cafe's created a place for artists and intellectuals to meet and discuss ideas.
To this day coffee is the ultimate social drink. Great for everything from a low-key first date to a high-powered office meeting, coffee continues to bind us together and help us think clearly.
