A Family Business - The Emile Henry Story
The Emile Henry story begins circa 1850 in Marcigny, southern Burgundy, France. Jacques Henry, Potter and father to Paul Henry, designed and crafted jugs, pots, casseroles, dishes, and plates from his small countryside workshop using 2 wood-fired kilns and 2 manual wheels. In 1882, son Paul Henry moved the operations to Paris attempting to build his customer base and improve operations. Paul eventually modernizes the production process, replacing manual wheels with steam-powered ones.
In 1922, Emile Henry takes over the company. After spending time fighting in WWI, Emile aggressively expands the business. At this point Parisian customers account for 40% of sales. Fifty people are employed, and the finished product is left unglazed for horticultural use or glazed for culinary use.
